The best prop fighter is the P-51 Mustang!
1. fast prop plane of WWII
2. range, could take the bombers all the way to Berlin
3. used in various rolls, fighter, reconnaissance
4. protection
5. excellent platform for guns, bombs and rockets
6. take a lot of abuse and still come home
7. looks sexy, long graceful lines that you knew was a thoroughbred and why the Brit's called it the "Mustang".
What about you guys?

Hi, all of you!
Though I agree with you to vote for the multirole P51 (thanks to the British Merlin engine!...), I'd like to mention the FW 190 D as the best prop pure fighter especially in the defense of Germany role, end of WWII. She was known as the "Tempest killer" in some experimented hands.

Hi Guys, The "Skyraider was good prop plane and it had a lot of strength in the wings to carry bombs, rockets and what ever else they wanted to put on the wings. It was late in coming to WWII but if I'm not mistaken?????? It was used in the Vietnam war with great effect against the North as a fighter bomber and help with picking up down pilot I would say that it was excellent for the job it was produced and that was a fighter-bomber. It did shoot down a Mig, lets take a minute and think about what I just said, A PROP-PLANE SHOOT DOWN A JET!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still think that the P-51 Mustang is the best of the Best when we are talking about Prop Planes. The FW 190-Dora is the German best of the Best and I would think that the FW 190-Dora is close to the P-51. I just love the P-51 Mustang and if you talk to pilots they all want to fly the Mustang and when they do it's love at first sight!!!!!!

All great choices. Since Hobby Master already makes the P-51, Skyraider and the Fw-190 what prop aircraft would you like them to make, remember it has to be something they don't already make. I did pass on the request for the Fw-190D and the Bf-109 E & F.

My personal choice of WWII prop-fighters has to be the P-51 Mustang. To think that North American Aviation went from concept to being built in just 117 days is absolutely amazing! The definitive version being the P-51D, and replacing the Allison engine with the two-speed, two-stage supercharger "Merlin 61" engines was the right thing to do. The high-altitude performance with the Merlins was a significant improvement over the original engined planes and a true "Air Superiority" Fighter was born.
The experts will tell us that the British "Spitfire" is the best fighter ever made. Pilots who have had the opportunity to fly both aircrafts would say they would rather be in the Spitfire, because it (could out-turn a Mustang) in combat dogfighting. I think the Spit is one of, if not the best looking fighter aircraft ever produced and some times I find myself being torn between the two. But at the end of the day, the P-51 Mustang has my vote!
From the German perspective, it has to be the FW-190 "Butcher Bird". It was such a superb fighter aircraft, that what really separated it from the Mustang in combat situations was the experience level of the pilot. I have always believed that it takes both, a great fighter aircraft and a great fighter pilot to have the complete package! You can have the "best fighter" being flown by a regular guy and he probably won't last long.
It's a "double edged sword," being passionate about aviation and loving all different kinds of aircrafts for various reasons. Great fighter aircrafts can't fly themselves, they need the man. These great fighter aircrafts give the regular guy the opportunity to become a great fighter pilot, and maybe someday an "Ace"...

I eventually agree with the P51 to be on the Top of the propeller WWII fighters (though a liquid cooled engine was much more fragile to combat damages than air cooled one...). But...the faster, the safier!!

Hangar56 has got it right concerning the difference between aircraft, such as the Spitfire, P-51 and the FW 190. You place the right man in the plane whether it be the Spit, P-51 and the FW 190. These are 3 great planes and I like all 3 and it would be hard for me to make the call. But all the reading, the visit with WWII fighter pilots and those that have had the experience to fly some of these aircraft the majority had picked the P-51 Mustang. At the top of the list for me is the P-51, the Spitfire and the FW 190 Dora. The FW 190 Dora is one plane that we can never come away with how it would preformed in a dog fight. The reason is because it came to the air war late and most of the experience German Pilots were flying the Me 262 or dead!
Most of the German aircraft captured by the U.S. were taken to Wright Patterson for testing. Those pilots that were flying the FW 190 Dora stated they thought that Dora was as good as the P-51 Mustang. As be too young to be a pilot during WWII I have no experience of having the privilege of flying either aircraft. If I had the choice to fly 1 of the 3 aircraft to go into battle I would pick the P-51 Mustang. I would have to say that it had long legs and could loiter for a looooong time, it can carry bombs and rockets, good protection for the pilots, good visibility because of the bubble canopy and it's fast. Now compare the other 2 aircraft and then which one would you want to fly into battle????????
I LOVE the Spitfire and in 1940 I would want to be in the pilot seat of the Spit. It is one of the best looking aircraft and I have all 50 1:72nd scale Spitfires in my collection of the Corgi Aircraft. I have a small collection of Gemini WWII aircraft in a small collection other than the Corgi. I have all the Spits except for one (missing the exclusive "Spirit of Kent") and I'm trying to find 2 for my collection (anyone reading this and has the Gemini Spitfire "Spirit of Kent" and would like to trade or sell, I'm interested). Getting back to what I was going to say is that the P-51D looks like the FIGHTER and it has smooth graceful lines as compared to a good looking female model. The Spitfire is graceful and as the lines of a beautiful model but it doesn't look like a fighter. A fighter needs all kinds of tricks to fight in a battle and beside it's guns it needs to use all the things necessary to fight a battle that means it needs to carry bombs and rockets so it can help those on the ground.
Sorry guys for the long reading assignment but sometimes I get to passionate about certain subjects and this is one and that is why I collect WWII fighters.
